Former driver Eddie Irvine stated that Formula 1 “doesn’t need” Max Verstappen, after the four-time world champion suggested he might leave the category at the end of the 2026 season. Verstappen admitted he is dissatisfied with this year’s regulations, which place greater emphasis on electric power, and that he is considering ending his career in the category.

“I’m thinking about everything inside this paddock. In my personal life, I’m very happy. You also look forward to 24 races. This time it’s 22. But normally 24. And then you think: is it worth it? Or do I like staying at home with my family more?” Verstappen told BBC Sport.
The Dutchman had already criticized the new rules as “Formula E on steroids” during the pre-season, and maintained derogatory comments in the early stages of the championship. Irvine, the 1999 runner-up for Ferrari, commented to Gazzetta dello Sport: “F1 doesn’t need Max, there are many talented drivers. It’s hard for him to find himself in the middle of the pack. But considering his salary, there are more than €50 million (£43.5m) in good reasons to stay.”

Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle also criticized the driver’s statements: “Max is very unfiltered. I think it’s getting a bit boring. Either go, or stop talking about it. No one is indispensable in this business. The sport will simply move on if Max decides to leave.”
