Álex Márquez suffers fractures after accident at the Catalonia MotoGP GP

After suffering a severe accident during the MotoGP Catalonia GP held this Sunday (17), Álex Márquez made a post on social media to reassure fans watching the race. The rider appeared in a photo at the hospital wearing a cervical collar, had fractures in the C7 vertebra and right clavicle, and will undergo surgery later this Sunday in Barcelona, Spain.

“All under control. Tonight I will have to undergo surgery, but I couldn’t be in better hands. Thank you very much to everyone for the concern and the kind messages I am receiving,” posted Álex Márquez on Instagram.

Márquez’s accident occurred on the 12th lap of the Catalonia GP, held at the Circuit de Barcelona in Montmeló. Fighting for the lead of the race, Pedro Acosta suddenly lost speed, and Álex could not avoid it, falling and hitting a wall, while the Ducati prepared by Gresini was destroyed on impact.

The incident, which also involved other riders, interrupted the race with a red flag. Márquez was attended to on the track and taken to the hospital by ambulance, where the fracture diagnosis was made. There is no forecast yet on the rider’s recovery time.

The race was won by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who was also involved in the accident between Márquez and Acosta. MotoGP continues on May 31 with the Italian GP in Mugello.
