Carlos Sainz was satisfied with the progress shown by Williams after the first stages of the Formula 1 season. The Spaniard stated that the team finally managed to compete for positions in the midfield pack on equal terms with the main rivals.

The start of the championship was quite difficult for the British team, scoring only two points in the first three races. However, the Miami GP showed a turnaround and the Spaniard highlighted how he is starting to feel more satisfied.
“Personally, yes,” he replied when asked if he was happier than after the first three races of the year. “In Suzuka I was 15th, ahead of Franco [Colapinto], and in China I finished ninth, but very far from the base of the midfield pack.”
The Spaniard emphasized that, this time, Williams managed to surpass direct competitors on their own merit. For him, the progress in race pace was significant compared to previous races.

“We managed to fight here and won the midfield pack fairly. Alpine may be in a kind of no man’s land, but still clearly ahead of us. At least against Haas, Racing Bulls and Audi, we managed to be faster on merit, something that a race ago seemed impossible,” he continued.
“A race ago we were about half a second behind in race pace. So, we must have taken a pretty decent step,” he concluded.
