Colton Herta was the fastest driver in the only free practice session for the second round of the 2026 Formula 2 season, held at the Miami circuit in the United States. The home driver, who is in his first year in the category with Hitech, recorded his best lap at 1min40s320.

Second place went to Kush Maini, an ART Grand Prix driver who was 0.016 seconds behind Herta. Laurens van Hoepen, from Trident, was third, followed by Dino Beganovic, fourth with DAMS. Oliver Goethe, from MP Motorsport, completed the top 5.
Joshua Durksen, from AIX, took sixth place, finishing ahead of Alexander Dunne, seventh with Rodin. Rafael Villagomez, from Van Amersfoort, Ritomo Miyata, from Hitech, and Gabriele Mini, from MP Motorsport, rounded out the top ten.
Rafael Câmara, a Brazilian defending Invicta, finished the session in 13th place. Emmo Fiittipaldi recorded the 19th time with AIX.

The session featured a Virtual Safety Car deployment after Noel León stopped on the track following an off with the Prema car. Shortly after, the red flag was deployed after Nikola Tsolov, the championship leader, stopped on the track with problems.
From 3:30 pm, qualifying will take place to determine the starting positions for the two races of the weekend. The Sprint starts at 11 am on Saturday, while the main race is scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 pm.
