George Russell came to the defense of Formula 1 and the FIA when talking about the 2026 season regulations, going against the direction of most drivers and fans.

The governing body introduced a new package for this championship, but it pleased the competitors little. Max Verstappen, for example, has even put his future in the category at stake due to dissatisfaction with the path taken.
So, in April, a series of meetings was held to present specific adjustments starting from the Miami GP. And about the regulations, Russell defended the FIA and is excited about what lies ahead.
“Well, obviously we are the ones who have to drive the car, but equally, we are also quite selfish as drivers, and what might be the best, coolest, and fastest car for us to drive might not be the most exciting from a racing point of view,” he said.

“As I said, if you take the V10 engine era from the early 2000s, you probably have a great basis of what a driver wants from a race car, but the races were boring, there were no overtakes, and there weren’t as many fans following the sport,” he continued.
“And the truth is that F1 and the FIA are not idiots, they know what they are doing and the fans are loving the races right now, right or wrong. The races have been exciting, so I think we should be involved, we should help shape them, but I think many lessons have been learned and I think the next set of lessons will be really amazing,” he concluded.
