F1: Saudi Arabia shows progress in construction of new elevated circuit

New images released in the media reveal the progress of the construction of the Qiddiya Speed Park, a circuit designed by former driver Alexander Wurz, on the outskirts of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The track will be part of the Qiddiya City complex, which will include theme parks and a stadium for the 2034 World Cup, within the Saudi Vision 2030 project.

The images show the start of construction of the elevated corner “The Blade”, with a 108-meter elevation change — equivalent to a 20-story building — the world’s first elevated racing corner.

The circuit is expected to be completed in 2027, aiming to host the first F1 race in 2028, but the project could extend until 2029. The original plan called for the inauguration in 2024. Meanwhile, the Jeddah Corniche Circuit will continue to host the Saudi Arabian GP, which was canceled this year due to the war between the United States, Iran, and Israel.

In 2024, Lando Norris, the current Formula 1 champion, commented on the plans: “I saw the video and the preview, and it looks like something very crazy.” He added: “It’s what Saudi Arabia does, so all respect to them for creating such crazy things and trying to make it as amazing as it looks.”
