Carlos Sainz still keeps his eyes on the main Formula 1 teams while evaluating his future for 2027. A possible departure of Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing could open the door most desired by the Spaniard.

Sainz already experienced a similar situation in 2024, when he left Ferrari and awaited an opportunity at Mercedes or Red Bull, but ended up choosing Williams. Now, the trend is that the driver will wait again for Verstappen’s decision, although Red Bull expects to keep the Dutchman and Isack Hadjar in 2027.
The Spaniard is a strong and consistent driver, but not an absolute star. The numbers he has shown demonstrate balance in his battles against teammates throughout his career, with 112 better starting positions against 127 worse in qualifying sessions, and 118 finishes ahead of teammates against 123 less favorable in races. Therefore, a role as a second driver in a top team or as a leader in a midfield team is pointed out as the most suitable scenario for Sainz.

If Verstappen’s spot does not appear, Aston Martin emerges as a particularly attractive alternative. The team has Adrian Newey, structure, financial resources, and a factory partnership with Honda, besides having shown progress with its most recent update. If Fernando Alonso decides to end his career at the end of 2026, Sainz could take his place and form a duo with Lance Stroll.
Other possibilities seem less advantageous. Audi intends to continue with Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, while Haas would not represent progress compared to Williams, and Alpine, although having bigger ambitions, is not far ahead of the Grove team. Staying at Williams also remains possible, especially if the update planned for Baku represents a big step forward, but Sainz has already shown frustration with his team’s progress and interest in Aston Martin’s advancement.
