Lando Norris disagreed with Max Verstappen’s assessment of the Formula 1 energy algorithms in 2026. For the McLaren driver, the new systems may limit some opportunities, but better drivers can still make a difference in certain corners.

Verstappen had criticized the operation of the algorithms responsible for the energy distribution of the new power units. Since drivers do not manually control all the energy usage, the Dutchman believes this reduces his ability to gain time over competitors.
Norris, however, stated that there are still points on the circuit where the driver’s skill can be decisive: “If you are a better driver, there are still corners to try to gain an advantage over everyone, so I wouldn’t necessarily say I agree with everything,” said the Brit, in a statement to the press.
The McLaren driver cited high-speed circuits like Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps to explain his point. According to Norris, even with fewer corners where it is possible to gain time, a driver who is driving better can still finish ahead. He acknowledged, however, that some corners have become more limited, such as Pouhon at Spa.

At the Hungaroring, Norris assessed that the scenario is different and highlighted that there are situations where the behavior of the algorithms can be unpredictable: “Sometimes, it just does random things,” he said, adding that drivers need to adopt certain techniques to help the battery and that some driving styles work better than last year.
The Brit also highlighted that the characteristics of the tires have changed and influence the way the 2026 cars are driven: “There are many ways in which we have to drive this car very differently, unlike last season, but that is our job,” concluded Norris, emphasizing that each car has its own characteristics and that he could not speak for the other drivers.
