The Briton started as the favorite for the 2026 title, but with the end of the first half of the year, the scenario changed completely. Kimi Antonelli managed no less than six wins and nine podiums in the period, taking the lead with a 59-point advantage over his teammate, only third.
And although the Italian has often been faster than Russell, the Briton has faced a series of reliability problems and incidents. “It has been a nightmare. How much bad luck can one person have? On one hand, this bad luck is something the team needs to overcome. On the other, George is not experiencing a moment of high confidence,” he said on the Up to Speed podcast.

“You know when you see a tennis player who receives a high ball and has everything for an easy smash and to win the point, but ends up hitting the ball into the net because he starts thinking too much about the play? George is at that stage of the season where Kimi drives instinctively and relies on very good reliability, except in Barcelona, while George has been suffering from setbacks,” he added.
