Mercedes will have to make an important decision in the coming weeks to preserve its chances of winning the drivers’ and constructors’ championships in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team started the season in a dominant position, but Ferrari and McLaren have closed the gap with significant updates.

Kimi Antonelli remains the leader of the drivers’ championship, while Mercedes also holds first place among the teams. However, the progress of competitors may force the German team to extend the development of the current car, altering the initial plan for next season’s project.
Mercedes’ technical director, James Allison, stated that the choice involves a delicate balance between the current battle and future development: “Every Formula 1 team faces the same dilemma at some point in the season. When should you stop developing the current car and completely shift focus to next year?” he said on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show.
According to Allison, the pace of teams’ evolution makes it risky to abandon car development too early: “If you stop too early and your competitors keep finding performance, the final part of the season can become very uncomfortable. Our job is to judge that moment correctly,” he added.

Mercedes intends to continue bringing updates while assessing how much resource should be allocated to the future project: “We need to keep bringing performance to the track at a pace that allows us to stay ahead in the development race, while making sensible decisions about how much resource we allocate to the future,” Allison concluded.
The executive said he is optimistic because there is performance already identified in the wind tunnel and other developments still in progress, but emphasized that the program must be executed correctly so that updates reach the track and deliver the expected performance.
