Martinius Stenshorne won on Sunday (24) a tumultuous main race of the third round of Formula 2, held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, in Montreal, Canada. The Rodin Motorsport driver took advantage of a race marked by accidents and mistakes from the main competitors to take the lead and claim victory.

Second place went to Alexander Dunne, Stenshorne’s teammate. The podium was completed by Gabriele Mini, championship leader and third in the race with an MP Motorsport car. Nikola Tsolov, with a Campos Racing car, crossed the finish line in fourth despite a spin, while Sebastian Montoya was fifth after spinning during the battle with Prema.
Cian Shields, with an AIX Racing car, finished the race in sixth place, just ahead of Nico Varrone, seventh with the Van Amersfoort car. Colton Herta, from Hitech, finished eighth, with Mari Boya in ninth. The top ten was completed by Kush Maini.
The Brazilians did not do well. Rafael Câmara spun while fighting for a top-5 position. After losing some laps, the Invicta Racing driver finished 14th, outside the points zone. Emmo Fittipaldi, fifth in Saturday’s race, retired after going off track while returning from the pits with an AIX Racing car.
The race featured Safety Car deployments. The first came on lap five, when Laurens van Hoepen, who was leading the race, hit the champions’ wall with the Trident car, leaving the race. On lap 8, it was Emmo Fittipaldi’s turn, who was leaving the pits, hitting the wall after going off with the AIX Racing car. In the pits, John Bennett and Rafael Villagómez collided.

In an incident that did not trigger a yellow flag across the circuit, Nikola Tsolov spun while trying to overtake opponents who had not yet pitted, dropping down the classification. Then, on lap 17, Villagómez retired and pulled over, causing the Virtual Safety Car to be deployed.
On lap 23, Rafael Câmara spun with the Invicta car while battling for position with Roman Bilinski, but without neutralizing the battle. Four laps later, Dino Beganovic’s DAMS car had problems, forcing the Swede to retire from the race in Montreal. The Safety Car came out, and one lap later, Mari Boya went off track.
The race went to timed laps due to the incidents, and a new Safety Car deployment occurred with two minutes remaining, when Oliver Goethe crashed the MP Motorsport car after being touched by an opponent after the chicane. The neutralization ended the race.
The next round of Formula 2 will be held from June 4 to 7 on the street circuit of Monte Carlo, Monaco.
