The Azerbaijan GP schedule will undergo a major change, as Formula 2 has announced it will bring even more action to the streets of Baku.

The weekend calendar had already been moved forward by a day, with the F1 GP scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26, instead of Sunday, the 27th, to avoid Azerbaijan Remembrance Day, a national day of mourning to honor soldiers killed in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War.
Now, F2 has also changed plans for the GP in Baku with the expansion of the 12th round, which will have an additional qualifying session, as well as the addition of another race.
Due to the calendar revision, action on Thursday will start with a 45-minute free practice followed by two consecutive 20-minute qualifying sessions. On Friday morning, the Sprint will have the grid set from the first timed session, as will the race later that same day.
On Saturday morning, the second race will have the grid determined by the result of the second qualifying session held in Azerbaijan.

In a statement, Bruno Michel, CEO of F2, said, “As Formula 2 is the only support category at the Azerbaijan Formula 1 GP, we decided, together with the promoters, to hold an expanded F2 race weekend, with a free practice, two qualifying sessions, a Sprint race, and two main races.”
“This is the only weekend where the schedule allows these additional sessions, which will further raise the level of entertainment for the attending audience and all our fans. The Baku street circuit always provides us with incredible races; therefore, we are very pleased to make the 12th round of our season something truly unique.”
“We will then return to our usual race weekend format for the last two rounds of the 2026 season, which will be held in Doha and Yas Marina,” he concluded.
