Gunther Steiner argues that Carlos Sainz should have received a harsher penalty for the incident with Oscar Piastri during last weekend’s Formula 1 Hungarian GP.

At the Hungaroring, the pair were involved in a touch – the Williams regular was slower, made a move and ended up touching the Australian. In his defense, he pointed out that he did not see the opponent approaching and claimed problems with the electronic blue flag panels.
In the end, the Spaniard received a 5-second penalty – usually, the stewards give a 10-second sanction, but they took into account some circumstances of the accident. But for Steiner, it was not enough for Sainz.

“Nothing would have changed anyway. So, just to be clear, you know, you don’t do that under any software failure or whatever. It’s a blue flag, they are out there,” he said on The Red Flag podcast.
“Give 10 seconds normally. Don’t try mitigating circumstances. Who cares about mitigating circumstances. It was clearly a blue flag and 10 seconds. It’s standard, and he should have got that, and nothing would have changed anyway,” he added.
