The recent technical changes announced by the FIA (International Automobile Federation) for Formula 1, which will be implemented starting from the Miami GP, have reignited the debate about the impact of rules on competitiveness. Even off the track since 2022, four-time champion Sebastian Vettel commented on the topic and reinforced the criticisms made by current drivers.

During a The Perfect World Foundation event, the German stated: “From a sporting point of view, I hear and echo the criticism, because the guys are probably fun to drive, but it’s probably not as fun to race because of the regulations and the difficulties that come with them.”
He also emphasized the need to preserve the essence of the category: “So, I stand in solidarity with the drivers and I am very critical about not losing the DNA and the heart of the sport, which is finding the fastest driver in the fastest machine to win the race.”

Despite the reservations, Vettel showed hope that the changes would bring benefits: “I saw [the regulation changes] quickly, and I hope, from a sporting point of view, that this will make the drivers happier, because, ultimately, the drivers are the face of the sport.”
“If they get out of the car full of adrenaline and very excited, that’s what excites people on screens and also in the stands,” he concluded, highlighting the impact on the public.
