New circuits have been added to the Formula 1 calendar, but Nürburgring is still absent. And with Max Verstappen now frequenting the circuit more, the question remains why the circuit is not in the category – but from the racetrack’s own point of view, the current F1 model does not add up.

The four-time Red Bull champion has been visiting the track more and more in his adventure in the GT3 world – including competing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring this May. And the driver himself does not seem opposed to the circuit’s return to the main motorsport category’s calendar.
Not only him, after Pirelli tests in April, both George Russell and Oscar Piastri showed support for the idea. The last time the circuit hosted an F1 round was the 2020 Eifel GP, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, the circuit is open to a possible return to Formula 1, but not under any conditions. “I think it has always been a matter of perspective and long-term planning. What we have always said is that we do not want to return to Formula 1 as a temporary solution whenever Nürburgring is needed,” said spokesperson Alexander Gerhard to GPblog.
The executive also pointed out the financial challenge of hosting a GP under current terms. “If you look at the Formula 1 ‘product,’ at the moment it is acquired for a value X, and the potential return is extremely small. This means there is a high chance of loss with this event. This is not a business model that Nürburgring wants to participate in,” he added.
