George Russell left the Formula 1 Belgian GP frustrated, after another setback in a season marked by mishaps. After retiring on the first lap at Spa-Francorchamps, the Mercedes driver stated he was ‘numb’ with so many accumulated disappointments throughout the championship.

The team principal, Toto Wolff, acknowledged the emotional impact of the episode and assured that Mercedes will work to restore the Briton’s confidence. According to the executive, the team is fully committed to helping Russell regain optimism before the rest of the season.
This retirement at Spa happened after a power unit problem prevented the proper use of energy on the Kemmel straight. Without sufficient performance, Russell lost positions and ended up involved in an incident with Lewis Hamilton, which sent him into the gravel trap, ending his race immediately.
After the race, Russell did not hide his frustration: “I’m numb with disappointment right now. When this happens so often, you just get used to it,” said the British driver.
Asked how he intends to help his driver overcome this moment, Wolff highlighted the emotional burden faced by competitors in the category: “You have to understand that a driver gets very emotional when these situations happen. On the other hand, as a Formula 1 driver, you are part of a very select group,” he said.

The Austrian also highlighted the shared responsibility for the results: “It’s an honor to drive for Mercedes. Sometimes we fail, and it’s not just the driver, it’s us too. We lost important points in the constructors’ championship in our battle against Ferrari. I hope this feeling of numbness disappears. We will try to recreate optimism and positivity,” he added.
Russell’s season has been marked by a series of incidents beyond his control, including safety car interventions at unfavorable moments and reliability issues. Although Kimi Antonelli also faced difficulties, the Briton lost several points due to circumstances unrelated to his performance.
Wolff reinforced that Mercedes remains by Russell’s side during this complicated period: “All drivers go through difficult phases at some point, and you have to find ways to motivate them. I’ve known George for a long time, I understand his frustrations, and the team is 100% behind him,” he concluded.
