Mercedes arrives in Madrid after a perfect weekend in Monza, but Toto Wolff has already worked to lower expectations for the new Formula 1 stage. The team boss considers that the characteristics of the Spanish circuit will be very different from those found in Italy.

The result in Monza was Mercedes’ first perfect scoring weekend since the Chinese GP, when Kimi Antonelli won his first victory. In Italy, the Italian won for the seventh time in his career after starting from 19th position, while George Russell finished P2, securing a one-two for the team.
For Wolff, however, there is no reason to expect another dominant performance: “This next weekend presents a completely different challenge,” said the Austrian, highlighting that the Madrid layout has characteristics closer to the tracks of Budapest and Zandvoort.
The expectation, therefore, is for a much more balanced contest, with other teams returning to be able to fight for the top positions. Wolff assessed that Mercedes’ main task will be to quickly understand the demands of the new circuit and extract the maximum from the car from the first free practice session.

“We are expecting a very contested weekend,” Wolff added. The manager also commented that debuting on a new circuit brings a combination of opportunities and uncertainties, making it difficult to project in advance the level of competitiveness of each team.
Despite the caution regarding sporting performance, Wolff celebrated Madrid’s arrival on the calendar. For him, the presence of the Spanish capital represents another sign of the category’s growth, especially given the recent expansion to new street circuits like Miami, Las Vegas, and Jeddah.
“Madrid is a global city and racing there is another significant step for our sport,” Wolff concluded, highlighting that the interest of a capital considered iconic in hosting the category demonstrates the strength and expansion moment of F1.
