Toto Wolff confirmed that the organizers of the Spanish Formula 1 GP have already spoken with the FIA about possible changes to the Madring after the circuit’s debut received strong criticism for the difficulty of overtaking. The discussions aim to find solutions to improve races on the new Spanish layout.

Although the tight and technical design provided an interesting qualifying session, the race had few position battles. After the incidents and overtakes on the first lap, only four relevant overtakes were recorded, a number lower than the ten observed at this year’s Monaco GP after the first lap.
Wolff, Mercedes boss, evaluated the event structure positively despite the problems during the race: “For a first event, it was probably one of the best, or maybe the best I have ever seen,” he said, highlighting the challenge presented by the temporary circuit: “They built something challenging for the drivers, a mini Macau or a mini Monaco, and the location is good.”
The executive acknowledged, however, that there is a difficult balance between creating a demanding layout and ensuring overtaking opportunities: “That’s the tricky part. Making a spectacular track, also for the drivers, and then building it in a way that there are many overtakes,” he added.

According to Wolff, talks to find this balance have already started. He revealed having spoken with the circuit CEO and stated that those responsible for the Madring are open to changes for the next season.
“They said they had discussions with the FIA: ‘What should we do? How should we design the track when it comes to overtaking?’. I think they are working on it and understand that we can adjust a little here or there,” concluded the Mercedes boss.
