Formula 1 may undergo a new radical change in engines, and Mercedes is already open to the idea. Toto Wolff indicated support for a new generation with up to 1200 horsepower.

This discussion gained momentum after the FIA signaled a possible return of naturally aspirated engines from 2030 or 2031. The proposal would represent a break with the current hybrid era, which was created to attract major manufacturers to the category’s grid.
Even being a defender of hybrid engines, Wolff admitted that Mercedes is willing to consider the new path, as long as there is technological balance: “From Mercedes’ point of view, we are open to new engine regulations,” he said. He highlighted the historical appeal of the V8s: “We love the V8s, they bring great memories and represent a pure Mercedes engine,” he said.

The executive, however, emphasized the need to maintain some electrification to ensure future relevance: “How can we provide enough power from the battery without losing connection to the real world? If we go 100% combustion, we might seem outdated in 2030 or 2031,” he added.
Wolff suggested a ‘mega engine’ concept, combining about 800 hp from combustion with another 400 hp from electric power: “We are totally open to this, as long as the discussions are structured and consider all involved,” he concluded, highlighting the financial challenges faced by manufacturers, but assured that Mercedes will support the project if it is well planned.
