Max Verstappen revealed that he changed his approach at some points during the 2026 Formula 1 season because of Red Bull’s recurring problems. The Dutchman admitted that, without being in the title fight, he started to evaluate more cautiously how far it is worth taking risks.

In Monza, Verstappen felt this contrast again. After showing positive signs with the RB22 in Friday’s practice sessions, the four-time world champion again faced bouncing and imbalance during the Italian GP qualifying, ending the session in sixth.
The repeated difficulties throughout the year also changed his reaction to setbacks. “I’m not surprised by it anymore,” Verstappen told the Dutch press, including RacingNews365. “Almost every weekend this season there’s something, so you just have to keep going. We’re not fighting for the championship. That doesn’t matter that much.”
The driver emphasized that he continues trying to get the most out of the car but acknowledged that the current context requires a different reading. “I always want to get the best possible. If it doesn’t work because something keeps going wrong, I still get frustrated.”

At the same time, Verstappen explained that he tries to put the situation into perspective before exposing himself more than necessary. “On the other hand, you’re not fighting for the championship. So you need to try to put that a bit into perspective.”
The stance represents an adaptation compared to the aggressive style for which the Dutchman became known. With Red Bull alternating moments of good pace with behavior and reliability problems, Verstappen started balancing the pursuit of performance with the reality of the season.
