Aston Martin arrives at the Hungarian F1 GP with a widely revised version of the AMR26. The update package represents the team’s main attempt to correct the problems that have turned the 2026 season into a technical challenge since the early stages.

The numbers help illustrate the situation faced by the Silverstone team. In Spa-Francorchamps, Fernando Alonso was 3.698s behind Kimi Antonelli in Q1, while the gap to the Mercedes driver’s pole lap increased to 5.641s when the Italian set his time in Q3.
In addition to a lack of competitiveness, the AMR26 also presented reliability problems throughout the year. According to technical analysis, the Honda power unit has faced significant difficulties in managing electrical load, while the concept adopted for the car ended up introducing additional limitations.
The project followed a philosophy associated with Adrian Newey, based on maximizing aerodynamic efficiency and vehicle dynamics, even if this required concessions in other areas. However, the objectives set for the launch of the AMR26 were not met, leading Aston Martin to view the current season as an opportunity to gather data for the development of the 2027 car.
This reality explains the decision to introduce a deep revision precisely in the last stage before the championship break. The main focus is not necessarily to achieve an immediate performance leap, but to create a more reliable reference for measuring future power unit evolutions when Honda uses the developments allowed by the regulations.

Among the implemented changes are radical modifications to the sidepods, especially the air intakes, as well as a significant revision of the floor. In practice, the team adopted a new approach to integrating the power unit with the rest of the car, seeking to eliminate structural limitations present in the original concept.
During the first half of the season, chassis, aerodynamics, and power unit ended up forming a combination where the deficiencies of each component amplified the problems of the others. This made it difficult to precisely identify the causes of poor performance and made the task of separating the project elements that worked from those that merely aggravated existing weaknesses even more complex.
Based on the data collected in the first races of the year, Aston Martin initiated a recovery strategy that is not intended to generate immediate results. The updated version of the AMR26, presented in Budapest, is the first step in this process and will serve as a basis to guide the next stages of the team’s development.
