Formula 1 continues to be a nightmare for Lance Stroll at the 2026 Canadian GP. The Aston Martin driver will start from the pits in Sunday’s race after exceeding the allowed limit of power unit components.

The Canadian’s AMR26 received a new battery and a new electronic control unit, both already on their fourth use of the season. The regulations allow only three units of each component throughout the championship, which automatically results in a grid penalty.
The situation further worsens Aston Martin’s difficult weekend in Montreal. Stroll already faced problems in the Sprint, when he had to leave the grid before the start due to a suspension failure and also had to start the race from the pits. In the Sprint, he finished only 16th among the 21 drivers who completed the race.

Teammate Fernando Alonso also experienced difficulties at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. On Friday, the Spaniard crashed still in SQ1 of the Sprint Qualifying. Despite having enough time to advance to SQ2, he could not continue due to damage to the car. In Saturday’s Sprint, Alonso was the only driver to retire after a technical problem.
Before qualifying for the GP, Aston Martin also received two fines from the FIA. The team was fined €5,000 after releasing Alonso unsafely in the pits, putting the Spaniard’s car in Franco Colapinto’s path. Shortly after, the stewards also investigated the unsafe release of Stroll’s car, resulting in another fine, this time of €7,500.
