George Russell stated that Formula 1’s new technical regulations have transformed even the simplest aspects of racing into much more complex tasks. Despite optimism regarding Mercedes’ pre-season performance, the Briton believes that the 2026 season will demand an even higher level of attention from drivers and teams.
Russell arrives at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne with confidence after a positive sequence of tests at the Bahrain International Circuit. Mercedes showed consistent performance during the pre-season and appears among the teams tipped as favorites at this start of the championship.
According to the British driver, the team has finally managed to overcome problems that marked the final years of the ground-effect era.
“We had a much better pre-season than in the last four seasons,” Russell stated. “There is no part of the car that has caused us concern. Everything is working as expected and the correlation between simulation and track is very good.”
Despite this, the driver highlights that the profound technical changes introduced in 2026 bring a scenario of great unpredictability for the start of the championship.
“There are many unknowns,” he explained. “There are many discussions about starts, for example, which have become a quite challenging topic. There are many obstacles.”

According to Russell, details that were previously considered routine within a race weekend have come to require a much higher level of precision.
“Now any small mistake can catch you by surprise,” he said. “There is no time to relax during a race, in qualifying, or even during a pit stop. Things that were previously relatively simple in Formula 1 have now become much more complicated.”
Even in the face of these uncertainties, Russell believes that Mercedes has done everything possible to prepare for the category’s new phase.
“I think we have done as much preparation as possible so far. We are in a good position, but we know that each circuit can bring different situations.”
Tipped by many as one of the title contenders in 2026, the Briton ensures he doesn’t pay much attention to external predictions.
“I don’t think much about it,” he stated. “There are many rumors about Mercedes and we take that as a compliment. But when the helmet is on and the visor is down, you just accelerate and think race by race.”
