McLaren started the 2026 Formula 1 season further behind where they were in the last two years, but Lando Norris sees an opportunity. The Briton believes that an internal dispute between Mercedes drivers could pave the way for the British team to return to the title fight.

The first three GPs of the year, in addition to the Sprint race in China, were won by Mercedes, which comfortably leads the championship standings, while McLaren is still looking to repeat its 2025 performance. Even so, signs of recovery and planned updates for Miami fuel optimism.
Norris highlighted that a rivalry between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell could directly benefit McLaren: “The more they fight, the better for us. It’s good to see that, and it can help us regain ground,” he stated. He also praised Antonelli’s performance, highlighting the young driver’s evolution in the early stages of this year.

The Briton compared the current scenario with what he experienced last season alongside Oscar Piastri. On that occasion, the freedom of internal dispute ended up benefiting a rival (Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing) in the championship fight, something Norris hopes to see repeated now, but in McLaren’s favor.
Despite the complicated start, Norris remains confident in a recovery throughout the year: “We know we started a bit behind, but we hope to catch up. The more points they take from each other, the better for us,” he concluded, betting on a turnaround during the season.
