Charles Leclerc may have evaluated other options in Formula 1 before renewing his contract with Ferrari. This is the opinion of Martin Brundle, who stated that the driver “obviously” spoke with rival teams before signing the new agreement with the Maranello team, announced this week.

Commenting on his decision to stay, Leclerc repeatedly highlighted the influence of Fred Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal. Brundle drew attention to this detail: “Well, it’s very interesting because he keeps mentioning Fred Vasseur,” Brundle told Sky F1. “It’s almost like it’s a briefing; he wants to support Fred in the team principal role, and they are very close, just like Lewis.”
The commentator also highlighted the long relationship between Vasseur and his drivers. “They came up through the junior categories with Fred Vasseur, so, yes, it’s a long-lasting, relentless love affair with Ferrari — except for all the other teams they contacted before re-signing, just to see what the market was like, because that’s their job in this business when you’re in a leading team. So, let’s be very clear about that.”
Leclerc had his best chance to contend for the title in 2022, but he is still pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a world champion with Ferrari. Even so, he confirmed that he had other alternatives during negotiations. When asked which teams Leclerc might have approached, Brundle replied:

“It wouldn’t be with everyone. But obviously he would have been talking to McLaren and Mercedes, at least.”
Despite not winning since mid-2024, Brundle believes the driver remains among the best on the grid.
“He hasn’t won since mid-2024, but he can win this weekend, and he is one of the best on the grid. I think it’s great for Ferrari and great for him.”
