After the race, the governing body explained that the message “Safety Car In This Lap” was displayed by mistake due to a software error, creating the expectation of a restart before being corrected. However, the regulations state that, after the procedure of letting lapped cars unlap themselves, a full lap behind the safety car is mandatory. Since this procedure occurred on the last lap of the race, there was no possibility to restart the race before the checkered flag.

“I am a driver and, obviously, I think it is never good for anyone, on or off the track, to finish a race behind the Safety Car. I was a bit frustrated with the situation. At that moment I didn’t have all the information, but later I understood why everything happened that way,” said Gasly.

“I think we all agree that, in the future, ideally we should not have a situation where a race ends like that behind the safety car. I don’t think that is good for us nor for you in the press,” he concluded.
