New information has started to emerge about the future power units of Formula 1. The German publication Auto Motor und Sport brought more news about the engines expected to debut in the 2031 season.

According to the newspaper, the FIA is already planning to define the architecture of the power units in the next 2 or 3 months. The powertrain should be a 2.4 V8 turbo with the brake energy recovery system, the MGU-K.
Also, according to AMuS, the goal is to reduce research and development costs, but one point still under debate is the electric proportion of the hybrid engine. Therefore, the sport’s governing body is expected to decide this by the Formula 1 2026 summer break – but the publication indicates a decrease in electric input compared to the current rules.
Recently, Nikolas Tombazis, FIA single-seater director, had given a statement where he defended that the category cannot be hostage to engine manufacturers.

“When the current engine formula was discussed, some car manufacturers told us they would never develop a new combustion engine again. And they told us exactly when they want to build only electric cars. But that did not happen,” he highlighted.
To the German publication, FIA single-seater technical director Jan Monchaux said, “I think we will have to close the book in the next two to three months. I hope it doesn’t take much longer. Something concrete should be on paper by the end of the year, at the latest.”
