The survey revealed that 59% of participants see Antonelli as a real threat to Russell’s status in the German team. Only 34% believe the Brit’s experience will make a difference throughout the year, while 7% remain undecided about the internal battle.
After just four rounds contested in 2026, Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with one hundred points, opening a twenty-point advantage over Russell.
The young Italian also impresses with the results achieved right at the start of the year. Antonelli won three races and secured three pole positions, achieving the best start to a season in terms of points in the last ten years in Formula 1.

Meanwhile, Russell has only won the opening race in Melbourne, beating his teammate by less than three seconds. Since then, the Brit has only added a second place in China and finished fourth in both Japan and Miami.
The recent sequence has further widened the contrast between the two Mercedes drivers. Antonelli has racked up consecutive wins and shown increasing comfort in his second season in the category, consolidating his position as one of the main names in the championship.
At twenty-eight years old and still seeking his first Formula 1 title, Russell now faces what many consider the biggest challenge of his career. Antonelli’s accelerated growth within Mercedes has increased the pressure on the Brit, who sees the young teammate take the lead in the first races of the season.
