Gerhard Berger supports Max Verstappen’s stay at Red Bull in Formula 1, believing that the Austrian team will be able to regain competitive form in the near future.

The Dutchman enjoyed years of great success with the team, winning titles between 2021 and 2024, as well as narrowly missing out in 2025, finishing just one point short of the five-time championship.
Now, in 2026, Red Bull has been struggling much more with lack of competitiveness and after 11 rounds, the four-time F1 champion has yet to win. This has sparked rumors of departure, but Berger believes the driver remains in Milton Keynes.
“I am a fan of Max. I think he is an exceptional driver. When I look at Red Bull, I see that they have built a completely new engine,” he told F1.
“Yes, they brought in professionals from other companies, but to compete with the experience of Mercedes or Ferrari, and already be competitive in the first year producing their own engine, is really impressive.”
“The fact that they are currently facing some reliability issues is not good, especially when it comes to the wings, but other teams also have reliability problems. I believe that if Max continues working quietly with the team and they bring in more good professionals, I would say that within six to 12 months, I see them very, very competitive again,” he concluded.
