Fernando Alonso has not yet decided his future in Formula 1, despite previously stating that he would make a decision during the category’s break in August. Aston Martin confirmed that it is still waiting for a definitive position from the two-time world champion.

Mike Krack, the team’s Chief Trackside Officer, said before the Dutch GP that talks about the Spaniard’s future have been going on for several months. According to the manager, Alonso had indicated the break period as ideal for deciding, but the decision should only happen in the coming weeks.
“Yes, I mean, the discussion has been going on for many, many months. I think Fernando always said he would make a decision around the break. And I think we will see a decision in the next few weeks,” said Krack.
Asked about rumors involving other drivers, Krack reinforced that Aston Martin’s priority remains Alonso’s retention: “We have always said that the focus is to continue with Fernando. As I said, we are quite confident that we will have a good result. On the other hand, we need to respect Fernando’s request to make his own decision and we have to wait for that,” he added.

In previous interviews, Alonso made it clear that he would like to stay at Aston Martin, but still needed to define what his role would be. The Spaniard also believes the team will be world champion, with the only question being when that will happen.
Krack again emphasized that the team has no decision to announce for now: “I think we are waiting for his decision, as I said, and then we will see,” concluded the manager, making it clear that the two-time world champion’s future still depends on the driver’s own choice.
