Fernando Alonso was one of the first names in Formula 1 to celebrate Spain’s second World Cup championship in 2026. Minutes after the 1-0 victory over Argentina, in the overtime of the final, the two-time F1 world champion posted a tribute to the Spanish national team on his social media.
In an Instagram story, Alonso shared an image wearing the number 14 jersey of the Spanish national team and praised the team’s campaign in the World Cup.
“What a great team. Well deserved. Congratulations, Spain. The best.”
The post, with a Spanish national team jersey with the number 14, quickly resonated among the driver’s fans and Spanish sports fans. The jersey number also refers to the number Alonso uses in his Formula 1 career, chosen in honor of a remarkable victory achieved back in his karting days.

Spain won its second world title by defeating Argentina in overtime of the final played this Sunday. The second championship ends a 16-year drought since the historic 2010 victory, also decided in extra time.
Besides Alonso, other Spanish drivers on the grid are expected to comment on the 2026 World Cup final. Another Spaniard, Carlos Sainz of Williams, had not yet posted any message about the title at the time of this publication. On the Argentine side, Franco Colapinto, Alpine driver and the only representative of the country on the Formula 1 grid, had also not yet commented on the result of the final.
