McLaren has entered the debate about changes to the Formula 1 regulations for 2027, reinforcing its support for the proposed changes to power units. The team principal, Andrea Stella, warned that the category risks harming its own future if there is no consensus to approve the changes advocated by the FIA.

The topic gained momentum during the Canadian GP weekend, especially after Max Verstappen expressed concern about the possibility that the changes might not be implemented. According to the Red Bull Racing driver, competing in Formula 1 without adopting the proposals would be ‘mentally unviable’.
The modifications under discussion include a redistribution of power between the combustion engine and the electric part. The proposal presented by the FIA foresees a split of 60% for the combustion engine and 40% for the electric system, replacing the current 50% proportion for each component.
Although it initially seemed there was a clear path for approval, the project faces resistance. Ferrari and Audi are pointed out as opponents of the proposal, while Mercedes HPP, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford, and Honda are reportedly in favor of the changes. For the measure to advance smoothly in the Power Unit Advisory Committee, a supermajority of manufacturers is required, with support from four of the five suppliers, in addition to the FIA and Formula 1 itself.
Commenting on the matter, Stella stated that the adaptations made so far have helped improve the current situation but are not enough to solve the limitations observed in this new generation of cars: “Although we are getting used to this Formula 1 and have taken some steps forward with adjustments to the current equipment, and possibly can advance even further for 2026, in my view a hardware change is necessary,” he said.

The executive explained that the concept goes beyond a simple change in power distribution: “The FIA proposal involves increasing the combustion engine power through fuel flow, redistributing electric power in energy recovery and delivery, and also the battery capacity. All of this is part of a very important package that will make Formula 1 better,” he said.
For Stella, the interests of the category must come above the individual positions of the manufacturers: “This is a general interest that should prevail over particular interests, because if we don’t have good sport, if we don’t preserve the value of the business and Formula 1, everyone will lose,” he added.
The Italian believes there is still time to reach an agreement and fix problems that have been the target of criticism from drivers since the start of the new technical era: “I hope the ongoing talks lead to a successful solution and an agreement that makes this 60/40 split a reality. This will allow overcoming some limitations inherent to the current equipment. We have an opportunity to solve this in 2027,” he concluded.
