George Russell made it clear that he believes he has everything necessary to win his first Formula 1 title. Amid the internal battle with Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes, the Briton stated he is confident he can beat any opponent when he manages to extract the maximum from his performance.

The 2026 season marks the first time Russell is involved in a real championship fight. Mercedes started the year as the benchmark on the grid, allowing its two drivers to take center stage in the battle for the lead in the standings.
The moment represents a significant change for the British driver, who joined the team in 2022 precisely when Mercedes no longer held the dominant position it had in previous years. Even during this more difficult period, Russell accumulated consistent results and often managed to match or surpass Lewis Hamilton before the seven-time champion’s move to Ferrari at the start of 2025.
Now trying to close the points gap to Antonelli, the Briton assured that he is not focused on his rivals’ advantage. Instead, his attention is on what he can control within the team itself: “I have to be honest, I see myself as my main competitor. It has been like that throughout my seven years in Formula 1. I know that if I do everything right, I can beat anyone,” he said.

The British driver highlighted that this confidence did not arise only this season. According to him, the same conviction existed when he shared the garage with Hamilton at Mercedes: “That was already the case last year when I was Kimi’s teammate, and also the year before when I was Lewis’s teammate,” he added.
Russell explained that his focus is on maximizing every aspect of his performance, from working with engineers to car setup and tire management. For him, this is the most important path in the quest for the championship.
“I’m not looking at what my advantage is over anyone else. I’m looking at how to get the most out of myself, my engineers, the car setup, and the tires. I know that if I get all those points right, I can win. That is my goal,” concluded the Mercedes driver.
