Williams is moving full steam ahead with its long-term internal restructuring project in Formula 1. Now, it brings the experience of Piers Thynne, who comes from McLaren, to take on the role of Director of Optimization and Planning.

The executive built much of his experience during the long period he spent at the Woking team, going through a series of operational and management roles. He joined the team in 2007 as Gearbox Program Manager, where he stayed for five years before taking on the role of Head of Program Management in 2012.
He also served as Head of Program and Operational Logistics, Production Director, and Operations Director. Therefore, now arriving at Williams in Formula 1, he said, “I am very happy to join Williams at such an exciting time. Williams has a clear ambition to reach championship level in all areas and set new standards in the sport, and I can’t wait to contribute to that as a member of the senior leadership team. I had a fantastic experience at McLaren, helping to bring the team back to the top, and I hope we can do the same at Williams.”
James Vowles, head of the British team, added that “I am very happy to welcome Piers to Williams as we continue investing in people, processes, and technology to compete at the forefront of Formula 1. We have a clear ambition to build a team capable of winning world championships, and Piers has unparalleled recent experience in doing exactly that.”

Thynne was not the only recent hire by Williams in its restructuring. The team also brought in Claire Simpson as Head of Aerodynamic Development from Mercedes; Fred Judd as Head of Performance Optimization, brought from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains; Steve Booth as Head of Vehicle Engineering, coming from Alpine.
