George Russell saw his gap to Kimi Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 season standings widen. After the Miami GP, the Brit commented on his Mercedes teammate’s good form and how he is inspired by Max Verstappen in 2025.

The Italian secured his third consecutive win of the championship, while Russell crossed the finish line in fourth place at Hard Rock Stadium. Now, the duo is separated by 20 points in the Drivers’ World Championship.
After the race, George spoke with the GP blog about the current situation in the Formula 1 championship. “It’s clear that he is in great form right now and the moment is favorable for him, but I myself have enough experience, gained in championships I have won, to know how the moment can change throughout the year,” he said.

Not only that, Russell does not want to call it quits with only four races out of 22 on the calendar, also inspired by Verstappen’s comeback in 2025. “Besides, you know, looking at last year’s championship, to be honest, I’m not even considering that, I just want to get back to the top step of the podium. In the first three races, I had the performance needed for that. This weekend, I definitely didn’t have the performance needed,” he pointed out.
“I could be here now with three very different results from the previous races and this being just an isolated case, but obviously things happened differently in Japan and China,” he concluded.
