Bernie Ecclestone expressed solidarity with Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, while reflecting on the challenges the team faces in the pursuit of the Formula 1 title. Comparing Aston Martin’s situation to Ferrari’s endless search for success, the former F1 owner stated that ‘you cannot buy’ a world title and that, without the right pieces in place, a team can spend their entire life chasing success.

Under Stroll’s leadership, Aston Martin has invested heavily in its infrastructure, with the creation of a new factory, wind tunnel, and simulator, in addition to hiring renowned designer Adrian Newey and partnering with Honda for engine supply. However, Ecclestone acknowledged that, despite these efforts, the road to the title will be long, and the British team faces difficulties in achieving the desired results.
The team’s pre-season was harder than expected, with the AMR26, the first car designed by Newey, facing significant problems, including the lack of reliability of the Honda engine. The team completed fewer than 400 laps in the six days of testing in Bahrain, with engine and battery problems limiting the tests, especially on the last day.

Mike Krack, Aston Martin’s track director, agreed that the partnership with Honda has been a challenge, with problems in all areas of the AMR26. He also confirmed that Honda cannot be exclusively blamed for the team’s problems, as there are issues in various sectors of the car. Honda, in turn, acknowledged difficulties with unexpected engine vibrations, which compromised the testing plan.
Despite the difficulties, Ecclestone highlighted that, like Ferrari, Aston Martin may be in a long process of searching for the perfect combination to achieve the much-desired title in Formula 1: “The fact that there is always a piece missing from the title puzzle has been and is well illustrated by Ferrari,” Ecclestone concluded.
