Audi has decided to appeal the decision of the stewards who did not penalize Yuki Tsunoda at the Formula 1 Italian GP. The team notified the FIA of its intention to contest the investigation’s outcome.

The incident happened before the restart in Monza, after the red flag caused by Charles Leclerc’s accident. Tsunoda positioned himself incorrectly in his grid slot, a situation that led the stewards to order an additional formation lap.
According to Article B5.9.4, the driver responsible for an additional formation lap must enter the pit lane and rejoin the race from there. Tsunoda did not do this and was investigated after the Italian GP.
However, the stewards decided not to take any further action. The justification was that the driver corrected his position on the grid and that the decision to carry out a new formation lap came from the officials themselves, not from the Japanese driver.

Tsunoda finished the race in tenth, securing a point in his second weekend substituting Liam Lawson at the Faenza team. Gabriel Bortoleto, from Audi, finished 11th, outside the points zone.
Audi presented a different interpretation of the episode and now has 96 hours to formalize the appeal. In a statement, the team said: “After the Italian GP, we raised a concern about the application of Article B5.9.4, which requires a driver causing an additional formation lap to enter the pit lane and rejoin the race from there.” Audi added that, as the case has entered the FIA appeal process, it will not make further comments at this time.
