Lando Norris will continue at McLaren until the end of 2030, after renewing his contract with the team. The agreement is seen as a better internal alternative than the four-time Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen, who was considered for a transfer to the British team before renewing with Red Bull Racing, also until 2030.

Norris joined McLaren through the young driver program in 2017 and made his Formula 1 debut for the team in 2019. Since then, the Briton has remained connected to the team, and the new contract extension reinforces a trend of current generation drivers betting on continuity rather than seeking frequent changes.
Verstappen himself adopted a similar strategy by staying with his team, while Charles Leclerc also maintains a long-term relationship with Ferrari. These choices can be seen as a vote of confidence in a familiar environment, although there is still no driver in F1 history who has won titles in different eras while staying with a single team.
For Norris, constant evolution appears as one of the main arguments for McLaren’s decision. The Briton won the title in 2025, and even without the guarantee of repeating the feat in 2026, he has shown more consistency and made fewer mistakes this season.

Norris is not yet placed on the same level as talents considered exceptional, like Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. However, his continuous evolution gradually brings him closer to the group of top drivers in the category.
McLaren did try to sign Verstappen, but the Dutchman showed no interest. With that possibility discarded, extending the contract with Norris appears as a natural decision, especially because there are few drivers considered clearly superior to the Briton.
With a world title already won and an evolution that continues season after season, Norris represents a high-level option for McLaren in the coming years. The new contract guarantees precisely this continuity until 2030.
