Regulation changes in Formula 1 continue to divide opinions in the paddock this 2026 season. For Nico Hülkenberg, however, the category needed to keep up with the transformations of the current world to remain relevant, following a more sustainable path.

The Audi driver acknowledged that many fans still miss the era of naturally aspirated engines, but stated that the reality of the sport today demands a different path. According to him, sustainability and technological updates have become part of the business model of the main motorsport category.
“F1 is evolving all the time. Obviously, there are purists who love the old school and the sound of a naturally aspirated V10 or V12, including me. But the reality is that it no longer works that way,” said the competitor.

The driver also highlighted that the environmental agenda had a huge impact on recent decisions in the category, even though the topic is not as strong now as it was a few years ago. Still, he believes that those responsible for Formula 1 were pushed in this direction to keep the championship aligned with modern times.
“A few years ago, sustainability was a huge topic, now less so. But I feel that F1 and its rule makers were pushed a bit in this direction to keep up with current times. If you want to stay updated and continue being a legitimate business and entertainment model, you need to follow this path,” he added.
