Mercedes boss Toto Wolff believes that a potential title fight in the 2026 Formula 1 season between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will be different from the fierce rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2016.

After Antonelli’s first F1 victory, achieved at the Chinese GP, the nineteen-year-old is just four points behind Russell, the current title favorite. The proximity in the championship raises speculation about an internal clash within the team, but Wolff believes the dynamic between the two drivers will be more harmonious.
“Hamilton and Rosberg was completely different. Nico and Lewis had known each other since Karting, from an early age, they were friends, but there was also a competition that was always present. What was friendship turned into rivalry, then animosity, and they were two very different characters,” Wolff explained to the press.
The executive highlighted, however, that disputes and ‘elbows’ can arise when drivers feel the competition: “You need to understand that drivers are here to win races and championships. The moment that happens, obviously, the elbows come out. It’s something the team needs to manage,” he added.

Wolff said the current situation is different, as both are products of the Mercedes development program: “Both are Mercedes youngsters, we have been responsible for their trajectories since they reached single-seaters, Kimi since Karting. So, I feel we are in a totally different situation, although I might have to bite my tongue one day,” he completed.
The statement reinforces the team’s confidence in maintaining a competitive yet controlled environment, even in the face of the prospect of a fierce championship battle in 2026.
