Toto Wolff admitted that Mercedes may intervene directly in the battle between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 season, if the duel between the drivers puts the team’s interests at risk. Although he continues to allow free battles on the track, the Mercedes boss stated that he will not hesitate to ‘pull the handbrake’ if he deems it necessary.

The battle between the two drivers intensified again at the Canadian GP. Russell and Antonelli engaged in aggressive duels both in the Sprint race and the main GP, with several overtakes and tense moments as they fought for the lead in Montreal.
Midway through the race on Sunday, Russell retired after a technical failure in the W17 while leading the race. With that, Antonelli secured his fourth consecutive victory and further strengthened his position in the championship fight this year.
According to Wolff, Mercedes feels comfortable allowing this type of confrontation because the team showed a clear performance advantage over competitors in Canada. The gap to direct rivals allowed Russell and Antonelli to focus solely on the internal fight without immediate pressure from Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
The Austrian executive stated that the title fight between the two drivers is already a reality within the team: “Definitely, more than ever, this battle is happening. There is a lot at stake for both of them and also for us as a team,” Wolff said.

Even acknowledging the discomfort of watching such an aggressive battle from the pit wall, Wolff said the drivers were prepared for this scenario: “As uncomfortable as it sometimes is, you have to accept that this is the battle they were trained for,” he added.
At the same time, the Mercedes boss made it clear that the drivers’ freedom has limits: “If there was a situation where we believed the team’s points were at risk, or we were losing too much time to the competitors behind, we would not hesitate even for a millimeter to pull the handbrake,” he concluded.
Wolff also revealed that Mercedes constantly monitored the gap to rivals during the race. According to him, as long as the advantage remained comfortable, the team would allow the battle, but any approach from competitors would trigger immediate intervention with team orders.
