Toto Wolff opened up about Mercedes’ situation in the Formula 1 season and admitted that the team does not have as many resources for updates as their rivals.

The German team has shown great performance this championship, leading both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships. Of the first ten races on the calendar, they won eight – six with Kimi Antonelli and two with George Russell. However, McLaren has started to regain ground and in the last two stages, Hungary and the Netherlands, Lando Norris was the one who secured the victory.
The Austrian executive then explained that Mercedes chose to direct resources to early 2026 for car construction, but with the F1 spending cap, they now have to keep an eye on expenses. “We don’t have resources to implement development on the car,” he said.
“I’ve said before that we are trying to distribute this evenly throughout the season, based on our calculations about when we can bring the biggest updates and optimize scoring in the championship. We can only do what is within our reach, and that’s why it’s a development race,” he continued.

“When you bring an update, each of the main teams gains a few tenths of performance, at least that, and that’s the advantage you lose. The journey has been a bit tougher than at the start of the year,” he went on.
“We will see, later in the year, if they will be able to continue implementing as many new things on the car as they do now. Someone might adopt a different strategy, investing more at the start and middle of the season than in the final stretch,” he concluded.
