At the opening of the 2026 championship, the Australian, the home driver, was heading to the grid. However, he lost control of his McLaren at turn 4 during the reconnaissance lap and hit the wall, damaging the car and retiring from his home race right there.
Explaining the incident to the media later, the competitor pointed out how “a big element of it was me”, in addition to having pointed out an unexpected and “insignificant” gain of 100 kilowatts from his Mercedes engine.

Then, on his social media, Webber, also Australian, took the opportunity to briefly give his opinion. The former F1 driver shared a video of the moment of the crash on his Instagram story and simply wrote “battle scars are part of the journey”.
