Max Verstappen summed up the challenges of Formula 1 in 2026 in a straightforward way, after the Belgian GP. Commenting on the complexity of the new cars and power units, the Red Bull Racing driver said: “Welcome to F1 2026, sometimes it can be a jungle.”

The statement came during the interview with the three drivers who finished on the podium at Spa-Francorchamps. The topic of conversation was the difficulty of extracting maximum performance from the current generation cars, especially on circuits that require great energy management.
Winner of the race, Kimi Antonelli highlighted that the system is extremely complex and that, despite attempts to simplify, it is still difficult to find the ideal operation. According to the Italian, small changes in driving style can significantly alter the behavior of the setup.
“The system is very complicated. They are trying to make things a bit simpler, but sometimes it is hard to get everything right. On tracks that require a lot of energy, if you start driving differently, the system also reacts unpredictably. It is something complicated to manage,” said the Mercedes driver.
Charles Leclerc shared a similar perception explaining that he spent much of the weekend trying to understand the loss of performance of his Ferrari on the straights. The Monegasque revealed that he faced this problem on Friday and again in TL3, before finding a solution with small adjustments for the qualifying session.

“These power units are so complex that there are days when you are scratching your head trying to understand why you are losing so much performance on the straights. That happened to me on Friday and in TL3. Then, in qualifying, things went back to normal after we refined some details,” said Leclerc.
The Ferrari driver also admitted that the situation can be frustrating for those behind the wheel: “Even when you are giving your best, there are background factors that constantly change, and that is not pleasant,” he added.
It was then that Verstappen summed up the discussion in his own way: “Welcome to F1 2026, sometimes it can be a jungle,” joked the Dutchman, drawing laughter from those present.
Third place in the Belgian GP, the Red Bull driver also assessed his race as positive. Verstappen said he got everything he could out of the car and acknowledged that both he and Antonelli were disadvantaged by the timing of the Virtual Safety Car deployment: “I gave it all I had, and I think, actually, third place was a good result,” concluded the Dutchman.
