Lewis Hamilton has once again pressured the FIA for greater driver involvement in Formula 1 decisions. The seven-time world champion argued that competitors should have ‘a seat at the table’ during discussions about regulations, a topic that gained momentum after recent meetings involving technical changes in the category.

The debate arose after meetings between the FIA, Formula 1, and teams to discuss changes to the technical regulations, some already implemented at the Miami GP and others planned for 2027. Currently, drivers do not have formal representation on the F1 Commission, the body responsible for discussions about rule changes.
In Miami, Hamilton stated that he hopes to see drivers more involved in future negotiations. The statement resonated among team principals in the category, including Fred Vasseur of Ferrari and James Vowles of Williams, who acknowledged the importance of driver participation in the process.
Vasseur highlighted that drivers recently participated in discussions related to changes in the power unit and evaluated the dialogue positively: “I think a good example was that the drivers participated in the discussion about the engine modification in recent weeks, and that worked well,” said the Ferrari executive.

The Frenchman also emphasized that competitors offer a different perspective during technical negotiations: “Of course, they have a different point of view and it’s not always easy to find a compromise. But they are part of the discussion and will continue to be part of it, because we are listening to the drivers, debating with them, and taking that feedback to the FIA when we discuss the regulations,” he added.
Vowles also commented on the topic and mentioned the involvement of Carlos Sainz, director of the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association), in conversations with Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s technical head for single-seaters. According to the Williams chief, the Spaniard was consulted before the recent regulation changes.
“I know Carlos was consulted. Nicolas did a good job including him and asking questions before we moved forward with this regulation change, ensuring that he and other drivers participated in the process,” said Vowles. However, the executive noted that the meetings already involve many people, but considered it reasonable to have a driver representative in future talks.
