Otmar Szafnauer’s return to Formula 1 has gained momentum again after new details about his plans surfaced. The former team principal is reportedly working with a group of American investors interested in entering the category, either with a new team or by acquiring an existing structure.

In recent days, speculation about Szafnauer’s future has increased, especially after the former executive himself suggested in a recent interview that he was preparing new projects. The discussions involve not only Formula 1 but also other major motorsport categories.
Szafnauer’s intention to return to F1 is not new. The experienced former executive, who has held leadership positions at BAR/Honda, Force India/Racing Point, Aston Martin and Alpine, is looking for alternatives to return to the category.
Recently, the movement gained even more traction after Szafnauer took on the role of CEO and managing partner of Van Amersfoort Racing. The connection led many to believe that the Dutch team would be directly involved in the Formula 1 entry project.
However, sources with knowledge of the situation indicate that Van Amersfoort Racing is not the driving force behind the plan. According to this information, the project would be led by an as-yet-unidentified group of American investors interested in acquiring a significant stake in a team, founding a new team or completely taking over an existing structure.

In addition to Formula 1, the group is also reportedly evaluating expanding its presence in other motorsport categories. The creation of an IndyCar team and entry into endurance racing (WEC), especially in the Hypercar category, appear as possibilities considered by the investors.
According to the same sources, these projects outside of Formula 1 could be implemented more quickly. In this scenario, Szafnauer would be actively working to find the most efficient and viable solutions for the American investors.
Despite the speculation, the most likely trend is that Van Amersfoort Racing will remain focused on junior categories. Even as a traditional brand with over five decades of history, the Dutch team is not expected, at least for now, to expand its operations into Formula 1, IndyCar or sports car racing.
