Carlos Sainz stated that he intends to make progress during the summer break in defining his future in Formula 1. The Spaniard will talk with Williams before deciding whether he will continue to be involved in the team’s project.

Sainz joined the Grove team last year, after leaving Ferrari, attracted by the recovery plan presented by team principal James Vowles. The 2026 season, however, brought difficulties under the new technical regulations, with Williams losing ground compared to the position it held in 2025.
The team saw the rule change as an opportunity to get closer to the front of the grid. The result so far has been different, with the team falling even further behind the main forces, a scenario that fueled speculation about a possible departure of Sainz.
When asked when he will reach a conclusion, the Spaniard acknowledged that he has not yet set a date. “Honestly, I don’t know. I can’t give a date, but I imagine, as I have always said, that I would wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about it,” he said.

Sainz explained that he intends to use the break to discuss both Williams’ next steps and his role within the project. “I want to talk with them, with James and with everyone, about the future of the team and my future in it,” he added.
Although he expects to better understand the situation during the break, the driver emphasized that this does not necessarily mean an immediate announcement. “I believe that during the summer we will start making a decision and see the scenario a little better, but I don’t know exactly when that will happen,” he highlighted.
Sainz’s evaluation will therefore depend on internal discussions and the vision presented by Williams regarding the team’s development. For now, the Spaniard keeps open the definition about his stay, without anticipating which path he will follow after the season break.
