The opening of the 2026 Formula 1 season saw an intense battle in the very first laps of the Australian GP. George Russell revealed that the fight with Charles Leclerc for the race lead was marked by a “yo-yo” effect, with several position changes until Mercedes’ strategy defined the result.

The Briton started from pole position in Melbourne but did not get a good start off the grid. Taking advantage of the moment, Leclerc took the lead right at the start, beginning a direct duel between Ferrari and Mercedes that marked the first stint of the race.
According to Russell, the battle with the Ferrari driver was extremely dynamic in the opening laps. During the first stint, the two drivers swapped the lead seven times in a direct confrontation that confirmed Mercedes’ expectations even before the start.
“It was incredible. It was a great battle at the start, but we knew it would be tricky,” the Mercedes driver stated after the race.
The decisive moment of the race began to take shape on lap 11, when Russell took advantage of the Virtual Safety Car intervention to make his pit stop. Ferrari chose to stay on track at that moment, including during a second neutralization, and ended up making their only stop under normal racing conditions.
The strategic difference ended up proving important for the final result. After returning to the track on Hard tires, Russell had to manage graining issues throughout the stint but managed to maintain a consistent pace until the end.
The Mercedes driver completed 46 laps on the same set of Hard tires until the checkered flag, securing his sixth Formula 1 victory. The result also put him in the lead of the drivers’ championship for the first time this season.

Russell explained that the behavior of the cars in this new technical generation contributed to the direct fight with Leclerc. According to him, the loss of performance in certain situations made it difficult to maintain the lead for long.
“We had a suspicion it would be a yo-yo effect. As soon as one of us took the lead, it was practically impossible to keep it,” he said.
The Briton also revealed that he faced difficulties from the start. “I got to the grid and realized my battery was practically empty. I had a poor start and then had some very close battles with Charles,” he recounted.
Despite this, the driver highlighted the team’s work to achieve the result. “I am very grateful to the team. It was something that took a long time to happen,” he stated.
Russell also commented on the car’s behavior during the race, especially in the corners of the Albert Park circuit. According to him, the power mode used on the straights brought some limitations to the front of the car, which required caution.
“With the straight-line mode, we lost a lot on the front end of the car, so we faced quite a bit of understeer in the corners. It was a bit tricky at times, but we managed to make it to the end,” concluded the Australian GP winner.
