George Russell breathed a sigh of relief after facing unexpected difficulties with his Mercedes during qualifying for the Formula 1 Chinese GP. Even with a sequence of technical problems throughout the session, the Briton managed to secure second position on the starting grid.

The Mercedes driver was on a roll after taking pole and victory in the season opener at the Australian GP, in addition to winning the Sprint in Shanghai. However, qualifying for the Chinese GP ended up being much more complicated than expected for the Briton.
The problems began as early as Q2, when Russell had to deal with a broken front wing on the car. The situation already required extra work from the team before the decisive phase of the session.
The difficulties continued at the start of Q3. During the out-lap for his fast attempt, the Briton’s car simply stopped on the track.
Russell managed to get the car moving again, but faced another unexpected problem. The W17 got stuck in third gear while he was trying to return to the pits.
Despite the complicated situation, Mercedes managed to resolve the problem in time. With this, Russell returned to the track for a single attempt in Q3, being the last driver to record a fast lap in the session.
Even with only one valid lap, the Briton secured second position on the starting grid. He finished qualifying just two-tenths behind teammate Kimi Antonelli, who took pole and became the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to start from first position.
Russell acknowledged that the result was a true exercise in damage control. “It was definitely a job of limiting the damage,” he stated after the session.
The Briton explained that the sequence of problems made the situation extremely complicated. “In Q2 the front wing broke and I was still trying to understand what had happened,” he said.

The situation worsened at the start of Q3. “I went out for the lap and the car simply stopped on the track. It wouldn’t start again and I couldn’t change gears,” he reported.
Russell also revealed that his final attempt was made in conditions far from ideal. “At the start of the lap I had no battery, the tires weren’t at the right temperature, practically nothing was working as it should,” he explained.
Even so, the Briton highlighted the team’s work to put him back in the fight for pole. “The team did a great job to put us in this position. It could have been much worse,” he stated.
For the race, Russell will have an immediate challenge right behind on the starting grid. The two Ferraris will start right behind the Mercedes duo, with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc.
The British driver acknowledged that the start will be a critical moment, especially given Ferrari’s good performance in this aspect. “We need to watch out for the red cars,” he said.
Russell recalled that the Ferraris were very fast at the starts during the Sprint. “They were very strong off the line. I’m sure Lewis will be dangerous at the start of the race,” he concluded.
Even in this scenario, the Briton stated that the goal will be to keep the race clean and try to fight for victory in front of the fans in Shanghai.
