George Russell returned to the spotlight in Formula 1 after older statements about world titles resurfaced amid the internal dispute at Mercedes against Kimi Antonelli. The Briton began receiving criticism after comments made last season reappeared during the current championship.

Russell started the 2026 season as the favorite for the title but lost ground in the bets after Antonelli won three consecutive GP victories. The Italian’s rise within the team intensified the debate about a statement from the Briton involving Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ dominant years.
After the Miami GP, an interview given by Russell to The Athletic last year circulated again. On that occasion, the driver said: “There was a time when, if you finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a championship or a race, you would win the race or the championship.”
The Mercedes driver also suggested he could have won titles if he had arrived earlier in Formula 1: “If my moment had been five years earlier, you could argue that I would have two titles to my name,” Russell said.

Will Buxton, F1 commentator, criticized the Briton’s stance and said he saw a tone of arrogance in the statements: “I saw this quote today and fear a certain level of entitlement, as if he thought it naturally should have been his.”
According to Buxton, Antonelli’s rise may be increasing Russell’s frustration within Mercedes: “Maybe he is starting to feel that Kimi arrived and outperformed him in pure performance. There is this frustration of thinking: ‘I should already be champion’,” he added.
Explaining how he interpreted the Mercedes driver’s words, Buxton said he believed Russell was referring to the team’s dominant period at the end of the 2010s: “I think he meant that if he had been at Mercedes during those glory years, he might even have outperformed Lewis, since he finished ahead of him when they were teammates,” he concluded.
